GUITAR CLASSES AT THE FREIGHT AND SALVAGE AND Timbre Folk 2019

FREIGHT AND SALVAGE\

FUNK Guitar

Six Wednesdays; 7-8:15pm — price: $130, start January 9, (no class January 23)

Time to get down with our bad selves! We will visit the music of the pioneers of funk including James Brown, the Meters, Parliament/Funkadelic, Nile Rodgers, Sly Stone, Kool and the Gang, and the purple one, Prince. The groove was paramount in funk. We will not only learn about the guitar lines, but bring in the bass, as well. We will focus on the musical interplay between the instruments (much like we did in Grooving the Blues) and create multi-dimensional rhythms. Students should have some ability to navigate the fretboard, playing beyond first position (Cowboy chords). Note: guitarists are welcome to bring an electric guitar but must also bring a “small” amplifier.

Surf Guitar 101

Six Wednesdays, 8:30-9:45, starts January 9 (no class January 23)

Price: $130 early bird

It’s summer time and Surfs UP! Time to learn some classic tunes from the reverb-soaked days of yore. We’re talking Ventures, Dick Dale, the Safaris with classic songs such as: Pipeline, Walk Don’t Run, Wipeout!, Miserlou and many more. Of course, we will be using acoustic guitars, but  because these songs had such great melodies and grooves we will hardly miss the “wet” sound.

The PBJ is an extended class/jam — 2.5 hours — where I will teach various techniques and blues structures, which we will apply in a jam-type setting. We will cover rhythm playing: chords, swing and accents; lead playing: scales, phrasing, partial chords. We have a lot of fun. It’s a structured outline but with plenty of time for folks to comment and discuss ideas, and get feedback from each other and myself. If you are looking to expand your blues guitar playing and want to have some fun feel free to contact me.
