GUITAR CLASSES AT THE FREIGHT AND SALVAGE AND Timbre Folk 2019

FALL 2019 GUITAR CLASSES AT THE FREIGHT AND SALVAGE AND Timbre Folk 2019

Freight and Salvage

Repertoire for Fingerstyle Blues Guitar

Six Wednesdays 7-8:15, start September 11

This class is intended as a sequel to my class “Introduction to Fingerstyle Blues.” We will take the techniques we learned from the previous class (alternating bass and monotonic bass) and apply them to several early blues songs from players like Mississippi John Hurt, Big Bill Broonzy, John Fahey, Robert Johnson and Blind Blake. Songs will include: “From Four Until Late,”  “Satisfied and Tickled, Too," “Poor Boy Long Ways from Home,” and several others. You don’t need to have taken the “Introduction…” class to take this one, but you should be familiar with and comfortable playing alternating and monotonic bass patterns.

INTRODUCTION TO BOTTLENECK SLIDE GUITAR

Six Wednesdays 8:30-9:45pm  starts September 11

Slide playing is personal...it alludes to that quality of the human voice where we slip from note to note with a range of microtones and rhythmic expression. The wail of a blues singer is emulated by the sound of steel or glass slid along steel strings...it haunts us. The purpose of this class is to introduce the student to the sound, techniques, and evocations of slide guitar. We will focus on blues playing, but based on the level of participants and student interest we may venture into other song forms from rock and jazz. We will learn the styles of players like Robert Johnson, Son House, John Fahey, Ry Cooder and others. We will play in several different tunings (e.g. open D and open G), as well as standard tuning (EADGBE). We will play several different rhythm grooves to accompany our slide playing.

The PBJ is an extended class/jam — 2.5 hours — where I will teach various techniques and blues structures, which we will apply in a jam-type setting. We will cover rhythm playing: chords, swing and accents; lead playing: scales, phrasing, partial chords. We have a lot of fun. It’s a structured outline but with plenty of time for folks to comment and discuss ideas, and get feedback from each other and myself.
