Sing For Your Supper

We were a small but vibrant group this past Saturday and we experienced a first: a singer showed up! no guitar or harmonica; just a great set of pipes. I enjoyed this for a couple of reasons. First off, I don't really consider myself a singer -- I know, I know you all think I sound great, and that's very kind of you -- but I have been fortunate enough to play in bands with very good singers, so when I sing it feels more like I am accomadating the moment. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the singing I do, but I have a limited range and I have a tendancy to growl. Unlike the young lady who joined us on Saturday who sang in a very smooth jazz-itinged voice. Her delivery was much different than mine and I had to accomodate her vocal styling by slightly altering my guitar playing. Whereas I have a tendancy to plough right into the song, she had a way of hesitating that was more controlled and interesting.
Of course, this is what jamming is about: listening and accomdating, grooving and soloing, going with the flow. Easier said than done. But, like anything else, the more you do it the easier it gets.
